TRURO, N.S. — When Jeff Simms saw an opportunity to buy up a historic building and move shop onto Prince Street, he had to take the chance.

"It's exciting," said Simms."This move is the next part of our plan, owning our own building. It's a bigger and brighter space."

Simms is the owner of Bike Monkey, a bicycle and skate shop that's coming up on its 10th anniversary. To make the date even more special, they bought up the property on 1932 Forrester St., a historic building on the corner of Prince and Forrester. It previously housed Forage, amongst many other businesses, over the years."For us, the move was better for cash flow. A step-in growth for our business plan, for sure.

Simms hopes that the growth will be seen as cyclers and skaters occupying downtown Truro throughout the summer and winter seasons will catch a glimpse of the shop's bright-yellow monkey topping the door. "We're excited about the exposure we should gain from being a corner building on Prince Street," said Simms."The winter side of our business is skating, skate sharpening, so to be across from the ice pad ... it's a real neat historical building and a great spot in town."According to Simms, the pandemic was a great time to be a bicycle shop owner, as people looked for ways to get out of the house and exercise individually or with their families.

"In the commuting and active transportation side of it, we're probably a few years behind other communities," Simms explained."However, on the mountain bike tourism side of things, this community has been a leader in Atlantic Canada."
