Berea officials envision a redeveloped, expanded fire station campus on Prospect Road and hope to purchase a second neighboring residential property to further that plan.

at its Sept. 18 meeting heard the first of three public readings of an ordinance authorizing Mayor Cyril Kleem to enter into a purchase agreement for the 27 Henry Street property. The legislation lists the purchase price at $100,000., which was completed in 1970 prior to enactment of the Americans with Disabilities Act, is totally inadequate to house a modern, mixed-gender workforce, and lacks sufficient office and training space,” the ordinance indicates.

“In addition, there is not enough physical space to store and safely maintain vehicles and equipment.” Kleem told council the city looked at other sites to accommodate a larger fire station, but building one would be expensive. Instead, he said plans are to “hold for now and determine what we could do with it, if anything … to expand the fire station.”

Councilwoman Lisa Weaver asked “for preservation purposes” about the city-owned 21 Henry St. home and plans for keeping the structure intact. “We hope to evaluate it and determine what we really can do with that ,” Kleem replied. “We hope to maintain it in some way, but the property next to it gives us an opportunity to do a more extensive plan, regardless of what happens with 21.”“It doesn’t give us space, but it gives us character,” Weaver emphasized. “It is Berea stone, so I think that’s really an important factor here.”If you purchase a product or register for an account through a link on our site, we may receive compensation.
