The Yankees are promoting a highly-touted arm from Double-A Somerset to replace one of their most reliable relievers for the final few series of the season.
Peralta’s triceps injury is nothing new. He hadn’t pitched in over a week, unused in the bullpen since September 14 in Boston. Yankees manager Aaron Boone mentioned midway through this week that the trusty relief arm was dealing with an issue in his throwing arm.
Now the focus shifts to what’s next as the lefty is scheduled to be a free agent this winter. He’s been a revelation in pinstripes since he was acquired from the Giants in April 2021 in exchange for outfielder Mike Tauchman. Over 165 appearances, Peralta posted a 2.82 ERA with the Yankees, one of the team’s most reliable bullpen arms in that span.
Trusty lefties are hard to come by, especially an arm that’s considered a beloved clubhouse presence and a bulldog in big moments, but there are no guarantees that Peralta will be back next spring. The left-hander is due for a raise after emerging from arbitration . If the Yankees want him back, they may need to bid with other interested teams, offering a multi-year contract.
Gómez has been on the Yankees’ radar for several years, a righty with a high ceiling that’s struggled to stay healthy. He was added to the 40-man roster after the 2020 season, slowly climbing to Somerset — he made 19 starts with the Patriots this summer, posting a 3.58 ERA. In his minor league career, Gómez is 9-12 with a 3.44 ERA and 292 strikeouts in 275 innings and 78 games.
