That iconic moment — known simply as the “called shot” — has been debated, studied and celebrated for nearly a century. Next month, the gray New York Yankees jersey Ruth wore that game will be“Ruth’s World Series jersey is the most significant piece of American sports memorabilia to be offered at auction in decades,” Chris Ivy, director of sports auctions for Heritage Auctions, said in a statement.
Initially, Ruth did not say much, remarking that it must be true if it was in the newspapers, according to Heritage Auctions. He later embraced the story, even as others thought he had actually been gesturing toward the Cubs dugout or the stands. PitcherWitnesses in the stands included Franklin Delano Roosevelt, days away from winning the presidency, and future Supreme Court Justice John Paul Stevens, just 12 years old.
Ruth gifted the 1932 Yankees jersey to a Florida man following a round of golf, where it remained until the man’s daughter auctioned it nearly two decades ago. It has since been authenticated using photographs from Getty Images and The Chicago Daily News showing Ruth, Lou Gehrig and manager Joe McCarthy in the dugout, Heritage said in a release.Nicknamed “the bambino” and “Sultan of Swat,” Ruth hit 714 home runs throughout his 22-year career before retiring in 1935.
