An annual exhibit celebrating diversity was pulled from a planned display at a Florida college because the school's leadership asked for artwork with the words “diversity,” “inclusion,” “justice” and “equality” to be removed, the exhibit's organizers said.
Jamie Smith, the college’s associate vice president of communications, said the decision was made in part because the college believed three pieces of art “may have been found offensive and not embraced.”
She added,"We also took into consideration the values of the college, the recent vandalism of EOD's display and current threats of violence on school campuses," which she said may have detracted from the event being safe and welcoming. The cancellation of the art exhibit comes as Gov. Ron DeSantis pushes to remove diversity, equity and inclusion from Florida public universities. The governor held a press conference on Jan. 31 at SCF where he announced funding cuts to Florida public university diversity, equity and inclusion programs.
Embracing Our Differences had touted the yearly exhibition's growth and increased popularity, noting that it had attracted more than 4 million visitors over two decades. The group said its first call to artists received 124 submissions, while the latest one brought in 13,733 from 119 countries. The first year's exhibit drew fewer than 100,000 visitors, compared with nearly 400,000 last year.
