After the planned display was canceled the exhibitors responded: “We are not a political organization with a political agenda… Embracing Our Differences has remained and will continue to remain true to our core values.”

Jamie Smith, the college’s associate vice president of communications, said the decision was made in part because the college felt some of the artwork “may have been found offensive and not embraced.” She cited recent vandalism of Embracing our Differences art exhibits and threats of violence to other campuses as safety concerns for the college.

The cancellation of the art exhibit comes as Gov. Ron DeSantis pushes to remove diversity, equity and inclusion from Florida public universities. The governor held a press conference on Jan. 31 at SCF where he announced funding cuts to Florida public university diversity, equity and inclusion programs.

On Jan. 31, a vandal slashed and threw banners from the Embracing our Differences art display into the bay at Bayfront Park. The damage amounted to about $3,000, and police were still investigating the incident as of Wednesday, said Sarah Wertheimer, executive director of Embracing Our Differences. The display annually attracts thousands of area residents and visitors, along with busloads of school students to its banner displays of original artwork matched with inspirational messages.

This year's theme is “Embracing Kindness,” and the addition of featuring the display at two outside venues, in addition to Sarasota's Bayfront Park, was seen as another milestone.
