The West Papua Liberation Group are the armed wing of the United Liberation Movement for West Papua , who demand independence from Indonesian rule.Earlier this week the group released photos and video footage of Mehrtens surrounded by rebels wielding guns, spears and bows. The group said the they would ‘never release’ Mr Mehrtens unless Jakarta made the Papua region independent from Indonesian colonialism.
Consular support had been provided to the Mehrtens family but the Government would be keeping public comments ‘to a minimum’, Hipkins said.reported that a team has been deployed by the National Police and the Indonesian Military for a search and rescue operation, codenamed Peaceful Carstensz.Mehrtens, a former resident of Christchurch, is a husband and father who had been living in Indonesia after marrying a local woman, local media reports.
