Apple has finally announced the upgrade to its 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro laptops. Who are these laptops for, and what do they say about Apple's intended audience?
Unlike the introduction of the M2 powered MacBook Air, which saw the M1 MacBook Air stay on sale , Apple has not moved the various M1 Pro and M1 Max configurations of the professional grade MacBook Pro laptops down the portfolio. They are gone.
The entry-level professional MacBook Pro model comes in once more at $1999, a $300 premium over a similarly specced M2 MacBook Air. For a subset of users, the extra performance in the larger MacBook Pro laps will make that premium worth paying. I suspect if that’s the case, then bumping up the RAM and the storage will be a priority… a pricey priority at that. Turn up the specs, and your 16-inch M2 Max powered MacBook Pro with 96 GB of RAM and 8 TB of storage comes in at $6,499. Plus tax.
