One person was shot Sunday afternoon at a homeless encampment in downtown Nanaimo, after an altercation over stolen property.

Investigators believe a group of individuals went to the encampment to retrieve stolen property and the altercation ensued, said Reserve Const. Gary O’Brien. Police responded about 3:30 p.m to the encampment in the area of Mill Street and Barsby Avenue and came across a group of adults in a Terminal Avenue parking lot, including the injured person.Two people of interest have been taken into police custody on unrelated warrants. The encampment was secured while the scene was investigated.

Farnworth said he was aware of the Nanaimo shooting but couldn’t comment on the details while it’s under active investigation.Police are asking anyone with information or dashcam video to contact them at 250-754-2345.
