Money to twin oilsands highwayThe biggest envelope is $117 million over three years for the twinning of Highway 63 north of Fort McMurray, a project the government says will improve oilsands resource access. The province had previously twinned the 240-kilometre stretch of Highway 63 south of Fort McMurray, a route notorious for a high number of fatal collisions.
Just north of Calgary, $51 million over three years is tagged for replacing the interchange at Highway 2 and Highway 566 at Balzac, an upgrade aimed at addressing long-standing capacity concerns with heavy traffic to the CrossIron Mills mall and nearby developments.Article content Other new capital funds include $60 million over three years to replace the Vinca Bridge about 50 kilometres northeast of Edmonton, making it traversable for heavy-load trucks, and $75 million over three years for 23 assorted projects including the twinning of Highway 3 from the British Columbia border to Medicine Hat.Alberta is increasing its funding support for the province’s post-secondary institutions by 2.7 per cent for the upcoming fiscal year.
Finance Minister Travis Toews said that shift reflects the need to expand enrolment in programs that train students for jobs in sectors with current or anticipated labour shortages.Article content “This is about recognizing a great need for Alberta employers,” Toews said Tuesday. “Much of our investment is targeted towards the specific seats in the occupations and professions that are in high demand.”
