After delay, Texas history play debuted for Masonic visitors

San Antonio Bicentennial Chairman Edward W. Heusinger walks down Houston Street in downtown San Antonio in this undated photo, taken by a street photographer. A prominent businessman and author, Heusinger headed the Committee of 100, a group of volunteer “citizen promoters” who organized San Antonio's 1931 bicentennial, during which “Five Flags Furled,” a play about early Texas history, was performed. When going through papers from my aunt’s house, I found a program from a play by W.

The play was announced “to a large crowd … in the St. Anthony Hotel” as part of the city’s “tentative plans” for a March 4-9, 1931, bicentennial celebration commemorating the 1731 arrival of civilian settlers from Spain’s Canary Islands and the establishment of the area’s Spanish colonial missions. But by the time the bicentennial’s Official Souvenir Program, as provided by the San Antonio Conservation Society Library, was printed, Scarborough’s play didn’t appear on these dates or any other.
