Budget passes as enrolment increases; $25 million goes toward special education
The Algoma District School Board approved a balanced budget in the amount of $192,376,978 for the 2023-2024 budget year at its meeting Tuesday.
“We’ve staffed very conservatively as we approached the end of the school year and we will continue to monitor enrolment as we enter into September and at this point in time we believe we have a very positive enrolment picture in addition to what we presented to the board in March,” said Joe Santa Maria, ADSB associate director of corporate services and operations.
As of Tuesday, elementary level enrolment at the ADSB is up from the prior school year by 119 students and by 55 students at the secondary level. “That is not the case throughout the province. We were just at a provincial meeting and many boards are struggling to balance their budgets,” said Jennifer Sarlo, ADSB chair.New enhancements for 2023-24 through reallocations of existing budgets and new Ministry of Education funding based on the positive enrolment picture for September 2023 include:
