In order to save the program, trustees had to nip and tuck from other areas in the budget to save $610,000, including saving on vehicles, professional development, replacement furniture for portables, replacing laptops and cutting back on a half-time principal, as well as cutting back $150,000 in the plan to hire nine additional education assistants.
“I don’t think people understand just how much ice cube we have shaved, how little there is left to meet those needs,” said board chair Lyra Evans. “We’re seeing increased rates of burnout, we’re seeing increased rates of mental health issues. It’s because the amount of time and support has gone down year over year.”
“Rather than spending all of our time being concerned about $50,000 here and $100,000 there, I think we really need to get on with the bigger focus, which is, ‘Will this budget support our strategic plan going forward?’ ” The budget had $1.22 million in new initiatives, including $400,000 on wellness training for staff “to better prepare them to deal with dysregulated behaviours that can cause stress and injury as well as lead to eventual replacement requirements.”
