Drugs, cancer, and homelessness consumed him. But when he was given a second chance, he transformed his life.Xolani Luvuno stood on his one leg, his elbow crutches holding him up under the traffic light across from a small shopping mall in Pretoria, South Africa.
He worked this corner every day, only returning to his “home”—a homeless encampment of about 20 to 30 guys underneath a bridge—once he collected his day’s take. They slept on cardboard mattresses and used plastic bags for blankets. It was not the life he wanted, but it was what he had. Sitting on the curb together, the two had a conversation, and Luvuno shared his story: a past life filled with gangs, bone cancer that took his leg, and jail time.Courtesy Ironman/Craig Muller. His parents took off when he was young, leaving Luvuno with his grandmother.
The police caught Luvuno while he was robbing a house and detained him, which landed him in the Port Elizabeth prison for five years. Throughout his sentence, he expected he would return to his old life when he was released. But when that day arrived in 2008, there was a snag: His right knee had become double the circumference of his left.
“I can’t beat up other guys anymore,” Luvuno remembers. “So, I didn’t stay long in East London because the guys I used to beat up at Eastern Cape, they wanted revenge. I used to be a bully, so that’s why I left.”
