Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg delivered a speech at Georgetown University today defending and explaining how his company sees "free expression," as it faces withering criticism from Democrats for letting President Donald Trump post misleading campaign ads.
To make his case, Zuckerberg pulled heavily from the United States' record of debate over free speech in dark times, citing in particular a pair of civil-rights era precedents: Martin Luther King Jr.'s famous 1963 "Letter from a Birmingham Jail" and the landmark 1964 Supreme Court caseStory Continued Below
In addition to the history lesson, the executive touched on efforts Facebook has made to keep truly objectionable content like terrorist incitement and state-back election meddling off the platform. But extending those checks to political speech more broadly would be a slippery slope, he argued."More people across the spectrum believe that achieving the political outcomes that they think matter is more important than every person having a voice and being heard.
Both the setting and the messenger were key. Being in Washington guarantees the speech grabs the political class's attention, and Georgetown in particular holds significance as a standard-bearer of Jesuit traditions of open inquiry and free expression. And sending the CEO was a recognition that other Facebook envoys to Washington haven't been able to convince many in the capital that the company’s on the right track.
