Having trouble keeping eye contact in Zoom video calls? You're not alone. Psychotherapist Jeffrey B. Rubin, Ph.D. explains how 'Zoom intimacy issues' are a real thing.
-style talking heads are draining. It requires more effort to focus during a video chat, and it’s thus more exhausting than an in-person exchange. “It doesn't feel as dialogic. It doesn't feel like a conversation at times. It’s people lecturing at people, which can be tiring,” says psychotherapist Jeffrey B. Rubin, Ph.D. Amid a global pandemic, which has most of us as sensitive as a sunburn, this can have us feeling completely deflated by the day’s end.
This feeling of intrusiveness can be amplified if, say, you’re living in a smaller apartment and your desk is located in your room. In this case, logging into Zoom is to invite the eyes of your whole office into your bedroom. And perhaps you didn’t want them to know you haven’t yet upgraded your full-sized mattress to a queen. It’s a feeling of being seen in a whole new way that violates professional boundaries.
As far as eye contact goes, the user experience of Zoom has as much to do with the heightened experience and value of it. Users log on and are confronted with the disembodied heads and upper bodies of the call’s participants. It creates a sort of animated contact sheet of all your colleagues’ faces; you feel up close and personal despite the digital setting. And Zoom etiquette requires proper placement of your eyes.
