Two reports from Tweet Binder, a hashtag analytics tool, show that “the most active contributors” to the polls for #OscarsFanFavorite and #OscarsCheerMoment appear to have been automated bot accounts “that cast thousands of fake votes,”who has researched fanbots, similarly deduced that the questionable accounts “certainly do not look like they were generated by a human user.” But the outlet noted that Kirsch’s team could not “definitively declare them bots.
The Wrap also pointed out “some weird anomalies” in polling, including significant one-day spikes in voting, such as a February 27 leap to 25,000 votes after weeks of daily totals between 4,000 and 15,000. But an Academy source defended the categories’ merits, maintaining that only 20 votes could be cast per Twitter handle and that accounts less than a day old were banned from voting.
