A non-partisan grassroots group focused on climate policy says none of the four leading provincial parties in Manitoba is promising a clear and detailed action plan to meet targets set out in the Paris Agreement.

Cameron Armstrong, 23, is part of the non-partisan grassroots group Consider Climate, Manitoba. She hopes her organization's questionnaire on provincial parties' positions on climate change encourage Manitobans to vote with climate issues in mind.

"I know a lot of people who don't know if they want to continue in university because they're like, 'What's the point of getting my degree when things are already so bad?'" she said.Colleen Ans, 27, said it's surprising climate change issues haven't been mentioned more often during the election season, considering that Manitobans are already seeing the effects of climate change.

Christopher Adams, an adjunct professor of political studies at the University of Manitoba, said while it seems surprising that climate change hasn't played a bigger role in provincial leaders' debates, the major parties are largely following the lead of prospective voters. "That's kind of liberated the other parties from the issue of environmentalism," Adams said, since they "don't have to worry about votes being stolen from them by the Green Party."

The Greens vowed to bring greenhouse gas emissions down by nine per cent annually to meet federal 2030 targets, and Progressive Conservatives pledged to improve fuel costs and efficiency in the transportation sector through a $15-million fund that would equip semi-trailers with aerodynamic retrofits. When CBC asked the PCs if they wanted to respond to the five questions posed by Consider Climate, the party sent a statement.
