The dichotomy of metastatic breast cancer — a stage four cancer diagnosis may become terminal and yet it's possible to live a full life with this incurable illness for a potentially long time — creates cognitive dissonance. "People still don't get it," sayswith this."
Even so, I am living life, making my dreams come true. I don't define myself by my diagnosis. When it does come up candidly in conversation — because it is a part of who I am — I feel myself transitioning to the role of mind reader as the words "I have metastatic breast cancer" leave my lips.
It is like clockwork. And I believe it's said with good intentions, or perhaps it's purely reactive with no thought at all. But how we look and feel isn't always linear, and this innocent comment can be dismissive and triggering.
