New York is central to Yigal Azrouël’s vision. His version of the perennially chic Manhattanite is an edgy model-off-duty who prefers to wear draped dresses, slightly architectural tailoring, and the color black. But his passion for the city goes beyond mere aesthetics, as his collection is entirely manufactured in New York as well. “A lot of people are surprised by that,” he says.
Azrouël’s fall collection calls to mind a time when New Yorkers dressed in a harsher way, broadly speaking. In the 2010s, shearlings and head-to-toe black dominated the trendiest neighborhoods. Now, step out into SoHo and you’re just as likely to see that as you are a cow-print bucket hat or a neon green pair of pants.
That said, leaning into that harshness created the most compelling pieces in the collection, especially a semi-sheer, croc-printed trench coat with a shearling collar, and a netted dress made of a coated fabric and patent leather, layered over a slip and belted. Biker chick meets sea siren. A surprising revival to come out of New York Fashion Week has been the return of the bolero and Azrouël offers one in a creamy shearling.
