The Town of Yarmouth is pleased to announce that off-highway vehicles (OHVs) will now be permitted to travel along Water Street, connecting two rail trails and local businesses. The new bylaw, unanimously approved by Yarmouth Town Council, allows OHVs that meet specific requirements to access Water Street. This decision comes after years of advocacy and the passing of Bill 273, which grants towns the power to enact their own bylaws for OHV access.
YARMOUTH, NS – After many years of pushing for it to be allowed, the Town of Yarmouth is pleased that off-highway vehicles will be permitted to travel along Water Street, which will connect two rail trails these vehicles can already travel on as well as connecting them to local businesses.
When a public consultation was held in the spring, the town heard from people who were very excited to see this opportunity opening up. It also heard from members of the public suggesting the town should proceed slowly in opening up designated streets. Enforcement was also raised as a point of concern.
“Economically this is a golden opportunity for the Town of Yarmouth. It connects trails, brings people into town to our restaurants, shops and more, and is a forward-thinking move,” Mood said. “My sincere hope is that we are all patient as this change takes place.”Even before a bylaw, there have been instances of OHVs being driven on some town streets and reports of drivers not abiding by speed limits.
