Utility man Oswaldo Cabrera started for the Yankees at first base in Game 1 of the ALDS on Saturday, filling in for injured veteran Anthony Rizzo.

Rizzo fractured two fingers on his right hand in the second-to-last game of the regular season last month. The Yankees held out hope that Rizzo could make it back from the injury before Game 1 of the American League Division Series, but it was always a long shot. Mr. Miyagi could only help so much in The Karate Kid. Ultimately, Daniel needed to act on his own. Cabrera showed Saturday that he’s more than capable of stepping up at first. Boone has said repeatedly of late that he’s confident with Cabrera at any position — a testament to his versatility and value — but to execute and handle the added pressure in a postseason game is another animal.
