But a funny thing happened on the way to Volpe’s ascent. He turned into a long-ball machine. And just as surprising, Volpe’s average never caught fire.
Yet, Volpe’s power is mushrooming. His 17 home runs are fourth-best among the Yankees, trailing Judge , Stanton , and Torres . There’s no time spent on fundamentals in the batter’s box, Ruta said. Instead there’s blind devotion to home runs and walks, which sabremetrics say is the most efficient way to score runs.
While everyone in the organization loves Volpe’s enthusiasm, humility and constant hustle – and that’s just the short list – one member of the braintrust is hoping Volpe will eventually swap out some of the power numbers for a higher average. “I believed in Anthony since he was a little kid,” Leiter said by phone on Monday. “He was always fundamentally sound, better than the other kids in every facet. But when you get punched in the nose, whether it’s in college, A-ball, Double-A, or your first year in the big leagues, you have to adjust.
