Chinese President Xi Jinping said his country will strengthen its armed forces and improve its preparedness for military combat,Tuesday, amid rising tensions between Washington and Beijing over the coronavirus outbreak and China's decision to propose new legislation tightening control over Hong Kong.

The U.S. has the world's largest defense budget – with its $738 billion slated for 2020 representing almost 40% of total global military spending, according to the, a Sweden-based global security think tank. "It has come to our attention that some political forces in the U.S. are taking China-U.S. relations hostage and pushing our two countries to the brink of a new Cold War," China's foreign minister Wang Yi said Sunday, as he rejected claims by the Trump administration that Beijing has impeded international efforts to determine the roots of the virus.
