One of the coolest X-Men retcons ever.
Summary SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT Warning: contains spoilers for Resurrection of Magneto #3!In a stunning move that rewrites decades of Marvel lore, X-Men just revealed the true nature of an iconic villain, while also bringing new life to many of the franchise's most underrated evil-doers. In the pages of Resurrection of Magneto, the X-Men's Storm has forced her way into the afterlife to bring back the Master of Magnetism.
Fans of the 2017 show Legion will recognize the Shadow King, played by actors including Navid Negahban and Aubrey Plaza. The recent New Mutants vol 4 has explored Farouk's tragic backstory, revealing he was only a child when the Shadow King took over his mind and that he still has the potential for redemption. The Shadow King has long been a dark god which exists across realities, but learning that it's connected to several other major villains gives it a concrete place in Marvel lore as essentially the cosmic opposite of X-Men's Phoenix Force, which is the embodiment of life and change.
Most of these villains have appeared only a few times in X-Men's 61 years of stories, introduced as huge cosmic threats before being largely forgotten. Ewing recontextualizes them as different expressions of the same core idea - a force of evil which despises life and change, and operates by possessing and corrupting powerful hosts. It's the kind of retcon fans love - one which grants new significance to past stories and revives forgotten lore with fresh significance.
