While epidemiologist and other experts can better evaluate the health policy aspects of Slavitt and Gottlieb’s proposal, opining on the financial incentives falls within my wheelhouse. Simply put, providing a monetary incentive to self-isolate is astute, but the amount, $50 per day, may fall short of what is truly be needed to effect behavioral change.notedwhen federal jury duty pay was increased from $40 to $50 per day, “juror compensation was never meant to serve as a substitute for a salary.
Taken together, these comparisons point to the need to augment the initial amount in the proposal. An increase would also reconcile with Slavitt’s“it would be difficult for people to comply. . . if you told somebody who was living paycheck to paycheck to go without two paychecks in order to make all the rest of us safe.”even before the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, it may be difficult to shift behavior without a higher amount that actually replaces the majority of a person’s wages.
