. That’s firmly off the table. Trading Golladay would provide the Giants with a lifeline while offloading the majority of his contract and the baggage that comes with it.
While Schoen remains in the infancy of shaping his Giants, he’s likely as concerned with dumping long-term money as he is acquiring new talent. Freedom to construct his roster restriction-free is the eventual outcome Schoen likely hopes to achieve, but figuring out how to work around Golladay’s contract is the unfortunate task for Schoen given the unlikeliness of finding a willing trade partner. High-priced receivers with performance and effort issues aren’t exactly in demand.
The wide receiver market exploded this offseason. Paying productive receivers $20-plus million annually is the new norm. Currently, there are 14 NFL receivers earning that number or higher, the majority of which signed new contracts this offseason. Ironically, these developments would make Golladay’s contract an excellent deal had the former Northern Illinois standout been producing the No. 1 receiver numbers the ex-regime hoped he would.
It’s a fate-deciding campaign for Jones at quarterback, who is entering the final season of his four-year rookie contract following Schoen’s decision to decline his fifth-year option. In theory, possessing a potentially dominant boundary receiver like Golladay should help Jones reach new heights . The Giants could use better receiver play in 2022. Whether it comes from Golladay or not, the Giants’ coaching staff has no choice but to continue working with him.
