I recently asked breastfeeding workers to share horror stories of how they managed before federal laws required employers to provide time and space to pump breast milk.“We had one open-concept office with one bathroom. That’s where I pumped,” said Sarah Falcon, a marketing consultant in Warrenton, Va. Besides the awkwardness of having everyone know where she was and why, “I’d also feel awful taking up the one bathroom for 20-plus minutes,” she said via Facebook.
Public school teachers had tales galore of pumping in empty classrooms and storage closets, always listening for the jiggle of a door handle. As a medical resident in the late 1990s, Friederike Keating, professor at the University of Vermont Larner College of Medicine, had to pump in a small ICU on-call room next to a bed occupied by a male resident.
