Sylvia Gonzalez sued after being jailed as a city council member. She’s in Washington for the nation’s highest court to sort it out.
A 77-year-old Castle Hills woman will ask the U.S. Supreme Court on Wednesday to rule that her rights were violated when she was thrown in jail while serving on the suburb’s city council five years ago. Accusing the small city of retaliation and violations of the First and 14th amendments, Sylvia Gonzalez is in Washington for the culmination of a federal lawsuit she filed a year after her July 2019 arrest on a charge of tampering with a public document.
The government and its officials cannot then turn around and retaliate against that person in any way, and certainly that includes arresting someone and charging them with a crime,” Jaicomo said. At the time, Gonzalez was part of a three-member voting majority on the five-member council that passed a resolution limiting citizen comments during its meetings.
