A woman and two children were taken to area hospitals Sunday after an extra-alarm blaze raced through their West Side apartment building, according to fire officials.
Fire crews were called to the three-story building in the 3600 block of West Lexington Street in the Homan Square neighborhood around 6 a.m. The alarm was raised to a 2-11, which summons additional manpower and equipment to the scene. A woman in her 60s was taken to Stroger Hospital in stable condition, while two children were also taken in as a precaution, according to the Chicago Fire Department. It was unclear whether all of the victims came from the same unit.
Fire command briefly had a “mayday” call as firefighters fought the blaze but called it off once all firefighters were accounted for, said spokesman Larry Merritt. The fire was doused by 8:45 a.m. The fire caused extensive damage to the building, but a preliminary cause hadn’t been determined, Merritt said.
