Pro basketball player Jewell Loyd and her brother Jarryd Loyd, a former pro basketball player, have opened a Smoothie King shop in Skokie.

Jarryd Loyd, a business exec and former pro basketball player and his sister Jewell Loyd, not pictured, a WNBA player for the Seattle Storm, have opened Smoothie King in Skokie. Their mother Gwendolyn Davis-Loyd is at left. The siblings grew up in Lincolnwood and attended Niles West High School.

Yet when she returns home after the season, Jewell Loyd said she’ll be a regular at the store, having taken training behind the counter in preparing the menu’s dozens of different smoothies, a personal daily sweet-tooth favorite. And if fans want to talk up her 2020 U.S. Olympic basketball gold medal, Loyd says she’ll chat.“It’s efficient and effective.

Smoothie King employs 12, the majority of which worked in high gear serving the opening mob. Jarryd Loyd said the store has established an ongoing relationship with Niles West High School, alma mater for him and Jewell, for potential workers. Jewell Loyd and her father Calvin Loyd are shown during a 2019 ceremony dedicating a basketball court at Lincolnwood's Proesel Park in her honor. Loyd, who played at Niles West High School and the University of Notre Dame, plays in the WNBA with the Seattle Storm.
