The suspect was sentenced to eight years in prison for the crime.

A Union County jury convicted Javon Pittman of manslaughter and a firearm charge in March of 2020 for the December 2017 shooting death of Kevinray Hall, 29, of Hillside. Pittman had originally been charged with murder.Authorities suspected Pittman shot Hall during a confrontation and physical fight on a Hillside street.

On the stand, the witness admitted to changing his story and lying to police during the two times he met with detectives. He said he’d “probably” told the truth on the second time. That was crucial, and a reversible error, since the eyewitness gave the only testimony at trial that Pittman possessed a gun and shot Hall, the appeals decision said. It had the “clear capacity to achieve an unfair result.”
