As of Monday night, Kelly Martinez led John Hemmerling by roughly 138,00 votes, with an estimated 80,000 left to count. She is set to become San Diego County's first female sheriff.
On election night, Martinez had taken a sizable lead early over Hemmerling, who recently retired as the chief criminal prosecutor in the City Attorney’s Office. She started out more than 10 points ahead — a lead that remained steady as more votes were counted and released through the weekend and into Monday.
As sheriff, Martinez will lead a law enforcement agency that has been grappling with record numbers of jail deaths and staffing shortages, and its own data indicates racial bias in stops and searches.In San Diego County, the Sheriff’s Department handles law enforcement in nine cities, from Imperial Beach to Vista, as well as the county’s unincorporated areas.
Overall, Martinez appeared to draw support from the urban and coastal areas. The Sheriff’s Department also runs the county’s seven jails — management of which has drawn deep criticism. This year, the jails marked a record high number of deaths: Nineteen people have died in custody, and one died hours after his compassionate release following a long illness.
