Winning Time highlighted Auerbach's NBA legacy.
Summary SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT HBO's Winning Time: The Rise of The Lakers Dynasty ended its second and final season with Red Auerbach's Boston Celtics beating the Lakers in the 1984 NBA Finals. Red Auerbach was a crucial element in the success of the Celtics' dynasty long before the events depicted in Winning Time, starting out as their head coach in the 1950-51 NBA season.
Winning Time season 2 finale's end credits proved that the HBO series would be coming to an end after just 17 episodes. While the acclaimed series certainly had plenty of additional source material to pull from for multiple future seasons, the show will not have the opportunity to chronicle the glorified years of the Showtime Lakers dynasty under head coach Pat Riley.
Red Auerbach Was Celtics President Until His Death In 2006 Auerbach was truly a Celtic for life and was the team's active President and Vice Chairman until he died of a heart attack on October 28, 2006 at the age of 89. Auerbach was honored for his service in the Navy during World War II just three days before his death. The incredible respect for Auerbach was felt by players and coaches across multiple generations of the NBA.
Auerbach also broke cultural ground by drafting the first black player in the NBA, Chuck Cooper, in 1950. Additionally, he appointed Celtics' legend Bill Russell as head coach in 1966, making him the first black head coach in NBA history. The Celtics retired the number 2 in Auerbach's honor, naming him the second most significant member of the Celtics organization after founder Walter Brown, whose number 1 is retired in his honor.
