CLEVELAND, Ohio – We sipped a baker’s dozen of wines from five countries. Bottles came from multiple regions of Italy to Bloomington, Indiana.
We recruited a sweet-wine aficionado for a few of our bottles, which cover quite a bit of range when it comes to varietals and flavors. Note: Our monthly reviews focus on wines $25 and under. All should be available on local store shelves. We list flavors we detect, then offer our favorite at the end.Blueberry and spice with notes of cedar chips. Held up on day two OK. Versatile red wine, not extremely tannic. Fair price.Lemon cream, key lime pie, grapefruit with apple on the finish. We split on this.
Rich without being syrupy. Caramel notes with a smoky maple flavor. Intense, with a viscous texture, but not too hot/alcoholic. Better with air, so swirl. Long finish. Aged more than 30 months in oak casks. This one sort of resembled a sherry you would have a few sips of as an aperitif. We shared it with a sweet-wine friend who liked it, but it drew positive reviews all around.Floral nose, very light, dry, somewhat acidic, with pear notes and some salinity.
