William Watson: Women’s hockey mimics government: Set fees first, seek partners later — via fpcomment
Or at least you couldn’t. One advantage of the recent announcement is that there will now be one league for professional women’s hockey in North America. That may help get support from the NHL.
Monopoly presumably also helps with TV contracts. The league will get a better price than if the PHF were still in operation, too. But in all other regards, the preference for a single league is peculiar, too, isn’t it? Labour unions typically want to play off employers against each other if they can. As a general rule, the more potential employers there are bidding for your services, the better the deal you get.
So far, the union’s strategy of holding out until an employer eventually came along who was willing to accept the terms of the collective bargain the players wrote for themselves does seem to be working. Do you suppose it might be the start of a new way of going about term-setting? Employees write down what they want and then see if they can find a business willing to go along with them?
If you think about it, though, that’s not actually a new strategy.
But, as often as not it takes such a position, like the PWHPA, without really knowing if there are counter-parties out there who will be willing to accept its gold-plated conditions. And also in seeming ignorance of the fact that we are in competition for investment with other countries who may be taking a less ambitious approach in setting their own standards.
