Part of the U.S. response has been to deploy the USS Gerald R. Ford to the eastern Mediterranean Sea along with surging missile defense systems and putting troops on standby. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin announced over the weekend that the USS Dwight D. Eisenhower Strike Group is being redirected to Central Command, which covers the Persian Gulf, the Red Sea and other areas in the Middle East.
“Following detailed discussions with President Biden on recent escalations by Iran and its proxy forces across the Middle East Region, today I directed a series of additional steps to further strengthen the Department of Defense posture in the region,” Austin said. “These steps will bolster regional deterrence efforts, increase force protection for U.S. forces in the region, and assist in the defense of Israel.
Moving strike groups, personnel and surging resources is also a time-consuming process that the Pentagon is trying to get ahead to avoid being caught flat-footed in the conflict.“In conventional Western thought, of course we think this overwhelming show of force is going to push them back,” Chandler said. “When you start to look at the cultural aspects and the deep hatred that exists, that's when it starts to get to the unknown.
