Win Thanksgiving with tart, custardy vinegar pie (and the fascinating story that comes with it)
IN THE KITCHEN of the West Virginia farmhouse where I live, there’s a loose-leaf recipe book assembled by the woman who lived here nearly a century ago. The handwritten recipes and dozens of newspaper clippings remind me of well-baked pastry—golden brown and delicate, flaky to the touch.
One small, brittle square of newsprint from a 1930s edition of the Clarksburg Exponent reads, “Mrs. Flossie Hannah, of Sedalia, near Salem, submitted this recipe for Old Fashion Vinegar Pie. The recipe has long been a favorite with her family.”
