Why DE Barryn Sorrell could be key to Texas upsetting No. 1 Alabama
Texas sophomore Barryn Sorrell recorded six tackles and 1.5 sacks in just 19 defensive snaps during the Longhorns’ season-opening win over Louisiana-Monroe.AUSTIN - Near the end of his Q&A session with reporters at Big 12 media days back in July, Texas linebacker DeMarvion Overshown sprinkled some praise on sophomore teammate Barryn Sorrell.
Sorrell stuffed the sheet in his first career start, recording six tackles, two tackles for loss and 1.5 sacks across just 19 defensive snaps in the Longhorns’ 52-10 win. He posted the best defensive grade on the team and the sixth-best among all Big 12 edge defenders, per Pro Football Focus. Even though the Crimson Tide don’t have a starting five written in permanent pen, this week’s matchup will test Sorrell and the Texas defense in ways ULM couldn’t.
Texas will enter Saturday’s 11 a.m. matchup at Royal-Memorial Stadium as a 20-point underdog. And if coach Steve Sarkisian is going to stun his former boss this weekend, Sorrell, Overshown, Oghoufo and the rest of Texas’ pass rushers must make Young play under duress. Now he’s gearing up to compete against yet another Alabama team that’s national-title-or-bust. And if Sorrell continues growing at this pace, he could wind up being one of Sarkisian’s most underrated recruiting wins.
