Why Netflix may release Martin Scorsese's 'The Irishman' in theaters:
concerned the notion that the film’s theatrical release prior to its streaming debut was essentially honoring the letter of the law rather than the spirit. Alfonso Cuaron’s acclaimed Mexican melodrama played in a limited release three weeks prior to its Netflix debut and played here and there over the awards season. Netflix never releases hard box office figure , so we have no more of a way of knowing how many people saw it in theaters as we do how many people watched it via streaming.
Some in the Academy are reportedly pushing for new qualifying rules demanding at least a one-month theatrical-to-streaming window for any title. Now that Netflix is now a member of the MPAA , it will face more pressure to report box office numbers for the movies it does allow to play in theaters. That’s not necessarily an issue, especially if Netflix treats the theatrical grosses as essentially a business expense to market the movie for its streaming debut .
Netflix spent between $25 million and $40m on the Oscar campaign only to see Universal/Comcast’s old-school studio programmer take the Best Picture award on an awards spend of under $10m. I wouldn’t expectto be profitable under the conventional global release structure. There’s a reason Hollywood said no to a mob drama that would need around $325m worldwide to break even.
