To raise awareness for the vital services provided by the National Deaf Mentors Outreach Program, the actress designed a 14K solid gold Millie ASL Mama Charm in partnership with sustainable made-in-NYC jeweler Cut Clarity.
"I lost my hearing when I was two months old," Millie shared."Doctors and audiologists advised my mom, Emily, not to use sign language with me. However, she went against that and decided that being able to communicate and have a relationship was more important than forcing me to speak."
"Without this program and the early intervention program, my family would not have had access to learning the language," explained Millie."Likewise, I would not have the relationships or the opportunities I've had without ASL. Parents and their deaf kids need access to this language. But unfortunately, the program has struggled because of a lack of funding.
In addition, many simply do not have access to learn ASL. Millie suggests it needs to start with our government-funded agencies to change that."Police, Fire stations, Courts, and especially hospitals. There's still so much that needs to be done, but I think those would be a good place to start," she said."It's still hard to believe that deaf people are denied access to interpreters in hospitals. It shouldn't be happening, but it is.
So she designed the charm to inspire others to learn to sign and honor her mom."My mother is my most important relationship, and I love that the charm comes in two pieces that can be worn together or shared between mother and child," said Millie."Right now, only 8% of hearing parents with a deaf child learn sign language. I hope this charm inspires hearing parents learn the language most accessible to deaf children.
