Sen. Kyrsten Sinema has emerged as one of the most powerful Democrats in Washington, with her concerns about the size and funding for Democrats’ social policy and climate package dictating what the party will be able to pass
.
In a 50-50 Senate with no Republican support expected, both centrist Democrats must back the measure for it to proceed. Frustrated Democrats can’t live with Ms. Sinema and can’t live without her. Democrats had planned to partially reverse the legislation, by increasing it by single digits and use the revenue to fund legislation that would provide free pre-K to 3- and 4-year-olds, expand Medicare coverage and work to mitigate the effects of climate change.
“We haven’t talked about revenue yet. So the president has said that everything will be paid for and it will be through tax increases on the wealthiest and that’s what I’m still believing is going to be the case,” she said. “I find it incredibly disappointing,” said Michael Slugocki, a vice chair of the Arizona Democratic Party, about Ms. Sinema’s opposition to raising taxes. “This is not what we elected her to do. She never ran on a campaign to defend the wealthy from raising taxes, she didn’t run on a defense of large corporations, she ran to improve the lives of everyday Arizonans.”
