, known as Frost Town when Germans settled there in Houston’s earliest days, was later nicknamed by the many Mexican immigrants who settled there in the 1930s. It was a place that offered accessible, if neglected, housing. But, as the refrain goes in Houston, it was no match for the interstate highway that wiped it from the map.
Often, after accepting a sandwich or the bags we prepared, people stuck around to chat. Small talk, at first, until we asked if there was anything on their mind, anything they’d like us to pray for. Others asked that we pray for their families, wherever they may be. Some led the prayer themselves with a spiritual eloquence that left me with chills. One laughed wryly and told us to ask God for the rain to stop.
