Why Highland Park keeps bulldozing its past | Opinion
Wealth, low interest rates and a city government that doesn’t take responsibility for the town’s heritage combine to dissemble Highland Park history.
The mighty tree — some call it the Monarch — used to stand in the center of this intersection before it recently died and was hauled off. On the south side of the corner stands a home that is a beautiful example of Highland Park’s past. On the north is the Hobbit House, a modern home with outlandishly curved awnings, and what used to be between them was the tree.
Add to this the destruction of the historic Highland Park elementary schools, replaced by bulky leviathans that look like factories with a historical throw pillow or two, and you can pretty much see where the city stands on history. Mark Lamster caught the Park Cities speeding in his right-headed “Save the Top 100″ column last month, with a focus on the Park Cities because the historic homes are clearly endangered.
