Why doesn't Southwest Airlines fly out of DFW International Airport?

While it wants to retain those gates, it’s also eying a shiny new terminal soon planned at DFW International Airport in the future. But we’re a long way from that happening.
to make way for the $700 million combined regional airport later known as DFW International. But Southwest fought and won a long legal fight to fly out of Love Field in the early 1970s.has long preferred Love Field as its North Texas airport, not only because of the legal restrictions but because it’s only a few feet from its corporate headquarters on the southwest side of the airport.
Due to an agreement with Dallas, Fort Worth, American Airlines, Southwest and DFW Airport, Southwest can only add flights at the larger airport if it agrees to give up space at Love Field — something it has not been willing to do. That stipulation ends in 2025.Southwest’s long-time CEO Herb Kelleher kept pushing for exceptions — and he kept winning. Some of these amendments meant loosening the ability to just fly to neighboring states and adding more opportunities for flights elsewhere.
