OpEd: 'News executives must recognize their role in spreading fossil fuel propaganda.'
That's why we cannot understand why newspapers and television news shows are still advertising coal, oil, and gas, encouraging people to buy more of the very fossil fuels that are causing climate chaos. As a journalist and a writer-activist, we feel that newspapers and television news programs should not only inform news consumers about the climate crisis, but also acknowledge the climate crisis in their business practices.
Of course, a lot of the ads for fossil fuels in news outlets do acknowledge the climate crisis, but only so they can misrepresent the commitment of fossil fuel companies to address the problem.
