Avocados' popularity has skyrocketed in the U.S. thanks to Mexico, which provides nearly 90% of U.S. avocado supply. Can the U.S. ever catch up?
Avocados have become nearly ubiquitous in American society, served at fast-food outlets and fine dining alike as demand grows. The U.S. Department of Agriculture reports that U.S. avocado consumption has more than tripled since 2001.The USDA reports that about 90% of all avocados eaten in the U.S. come from Mexico , totaling an estimated $2.7 billion in imports for 2024.
"We're just a teeny-tiny player now in the big picture," said Mary Lu Arpaia, a subtropical horticulture extension specialist at the University of California, Riverside.
