“I do wonder what trying to hold sponsors over the coals to get an extra 50% from them will do in the long term for us,” the golfer said at the PGA Championship. As Canadian golf fans may be aware, RBC is one of only two double-title sponsors on the PGA Tour, and the Canadian bank’s deal is up this year and has not yet been renewed.
That takes us to trying to understand the apparent rush to complete golf’s mega-merger. And for that we go back to a Canadian example.Article content It’s not expected at this time that RBC will end its sponsorship of either the currently-elevated RBC Heritage or the RBC Canadian Open, but if negotiations had carried on into the summer without a new deal in place, it wouldn’t be hard to imagine a time in the very near future when it became obvious that all wasn’t well with the tour in Ponte Vedra. Especially if the 2024 schedule it said was 90% complete last month became delayed.
It seems to be becoming clear that whatever leverage the PGA Tour had might not have made it through the summer.
