Recently, a family member said to me, “You’re being a good daughter. The men in our family are busy with their jobs. Caregiving is what good daughters do.” I was working two full-time, remote jobs on two different continents while also caring for my mother. I was barely sleeping and my mental health plummeted. My thoughts increasingly turned to ways to not be on this earth any longer. I was not well, yet I was given pats on the head for a job well done.
The belief that all girls and women possess innate caretaking skills is a sexist, pervasive view that reduces girls and girl-identifying youth as valuable for only what they can contribute as unpaid domestic workers. It ignores the reality that girls are often socialized from a very young age to provide care.
