Yet another of the president’s hunches about fixing the coronavirus crisis hasn’t panned out
earlier this spring latched onto hydroxychloroquine as a potential COVID-19 cure. The anti-malarial was unproven as a coronavirus therapy, and doctors warned of its potential dangers. But the president nevertheless promoted the drug with all the enthusiasm of the pitchman he is, even claiming last week that he was, for some reason, taking it himself as a prophylactic of sorts.
“So far,” heBut Trump’s miracle elixir suffered another setback Monday, as the World Health Organization suspended its global hydroxychloroquine trials after a study found that, rather than successfully treating COVID-19, the off-label use of the drug appears to result in a higher incidence of death.
